TIL: never give up on a beer.

We just finished pressing about 240lbs of Concord grapes from the local diner's trellises and I got the motivation to look into this ale again. My other buddy is the wine and mead expert and I tagged along to the brewing store and got the last items I needed to keg this ale. I probably could...

TIL: never give up on a beer.

I had a simple 5 gal batch ale(Northern Brewers on top of Willamette, 13lb of pale ale malt) and left it in the primary fermenter for almost a year, procrastinating--had everything to keg it but some tubing and starsan--and drinking store bought beer. Figuring it would be ruined, I opened it up...

First all grain batch last night

Ok, so couldn't wait. Cracked one open and it is WAY better than the extract batch that I finished over the weekend that was aged for over a month. Way better than that batch at 3 weeks, and this puppy has been in the process since 8/27/10! I hope I can wait till the traditional 6 weeks with...

    Tried harvesting yeast today

Another rather wierd question. What goes in to autolysing it to make vegemite, etc?

    Tried harvesting yeast today

So, the question is, is a quart of yeast in suspension overpitching? I swirled boiled water in the fermenter and let settled and drew off about a gallon, so I have no idea what the population numbers are in each quart, but they do look very white without any sediment.

    Tried harvesting yeast today

I bottled my first all grain batch--uncarbonated it wasn't too bad tasting. Can't wait till its conditioned. I put one gallon into the fermenter and swirled, let stand for 10 minutes then siphoned off 4 quarts. There are 4 quarts of stark white yeast settling in the fridge right now. I would...

    Over attenuated?

the mash temp was closer to 150 so that could be it

    Over attenuated?

So the all grain batch I brewed last wednesday is down to 1008 from 1054. The estimated final gravity was around 1010-1015. I used 11lbs of pale malt to make a 5 gallon batch. Is this overattenuated? It is quite dry and has little hops taste to it. I'm going to bottle tomorrow. Did I screw...

    All grain is crazy cheap!

Abracadabra you're definitely right, lol! I'm just suspending my knowledge of business and process and viewing things like equipment, energy, sanitation, and bottling as free. Its just amazing that even when you factor those in things are much cheaper. I guess if I reused corny kegs that were...

    All grain is crazy cheap!

So I figured that all in all my costs for the pale ale I brewed last night was $13.54 or a quarter a bottle! wow! Not including the cost of the equipment, lol! Sam Adams is $1.42 a bottle at the store, lol!
