    Raising the fermentation temp

Hi all, I have noticed in a few places that recipies call for the fermentation temp to rise over the length of the fermentation. Why is this? I am currently brewing a red ale which is fermenting at 19c (32f). What are the benefits to be had from raising this a few degrees through the course of...

    Way too high mash temp

Well... I bit the bullet last night and threw the offending 'brew' away. I took a gravity reading, long after visible fermentation finished, and was left with a beer at around 1.5%. I am really interested in using brettanomyces, however I don't have a spare fermenter so unfortunately this was...

    Way too high mash temp

Surprisingly higher .og than expected at 1.050... Will definitely take the advice here and smash some hops into it on a few days though. Will let you know how it turns out and what the final gravity is. Just one more lesson learnt I guess...

    Way too high mash temp

Everything I post seems to be a mistake of one sort or another, but I feel I may have made a proper mess on this one. I am new to biab and mashing, and have mashed at about 10 degrees higher than i should have due to a misread... My mash temp should have been 68/154, however due to my...

    First all grain- missed og

Rm: interesting- my local brewshop did the crushing. Will ask them about it during the week. Thanks cider- that was something that I was wondering about during the process. Epimetheuss; 1. Because it was my first go at biab and all grain, I made a very standard recipe pulled from a book in my...

    First all grain- missed og

Mash temps were pretty good, around 65c for the most part- although I did lose a little control at one stage and it got to about 71. I lost quite a lot of liquid- wanted to end up with 22l from an initial 26, and after I drained the bag had 22l, however only ended up with 18l in the fermenter as...

    First all grain- missed og

Hi all, Did my first all grain today and am waaaay of my anticipated og. It is a basic porter: Pmg 3.6kg C145 535 g Crystal 530 Chocolate pale 330g Aciduated 50g Fuggles 35g @ 60 15g @ 10. Nottingham yeast. Anticipated og- 1.052 Actual og- 1.030 I lost maybe 3l of wort in the boil as I had...

Dry hopping an ipa - limited ingredients!!

was going Mix citra and something else - amarillo maybe. I'm still new to brewing, but interested in testing out some combinations as while some of my dry hopping has been successful in the past, I have also 'wasted' a certain amount if hops this way by using bittering hops rather than aromatics.

Dry hopping an ipa - limited ingredients!!

I want to dry hop my ipa, but forgot to get to the store in time. I have in my freezer about 20g each of warrior and Saaz, and about 50g of simcoe. Should I combine some the simcoe and the warrior, or just hold off until I can get back to the shop?

    Steeping temperature

So I am doing an extract brew, for an ipa, and i have accidentally leg my steep of carapils get to a temp of 88c (or about 190f for those above the belt.). I have brought it back down to a more reasonable temp, but what will the impact of this brief but steep hike be? Update: Also, apologies as...

    Temp control fail

Hi folks, In my haste last night I accidentally plugged my beer fridge back into the socket rather than the ramp control unit. When i got home from work this arvo the fermenting beers in the fridge were at a frosty 4 degrees (Celsius), while the beers in my freezer were... Well, check the photo...
