    Help with making large starter

Thank you for your tip! You were right. It only took me closer to 18 hours for the fermentation to complete. Had a blowoff too. Thankfully the aluminum foil stayed on while the foam/liquid leaked down a little. Definitely will cold crash and decant the starter beer before pitching.

    Help with making large starter

Thank you for your tips! Made a starter and all is well. Cold crashed it and making a vitality starter this morning. Then cold crashing it one more time so I can decant for this weekend. Would the yeast be OK in the same flask and in the fridge for a few more days?

    Help with making large starter

I like the 2nd idea since I have about a week before brew day (Saturday or Sunday). Will make first starter soon and let it grow yeast in stir plate for 24 hours-36 hours then cold crashing before making 2nd starter. What is the best way to “wake up” the crashed yeast? Let it warm up to room...

    Help with making large starter

Thank you! I appreciate the helpful information. Looks like I may have to go for a step up starter since my yeast pack’s date is December 11th. I like the idea of doing possibly one 2ml starter with 1.040-1.045 but the calculator says I would be under pitched (0.84M cells / mL / °P compared to...

    Help with making large starter

Going to brew a Dark Lord Clone Kit (Extract w/ steeping grains). OG will be around 1.120-1.124. I made starters before for beers that have OG of 1.05-1.07 but never made a big starter. Imperial Yeast A-18 Joystick will be used. I only have a 2 liter starter flask. Should I make a 2L starter...

Safale US-05 Expires in two months

That is great news. Thank you. I didn’t realize it was best before date. It has been stored in the fridge ever since I bought the yeast. Will give it a shot

Safale US-05 Expires in two months

I have two dry yeast packs (US-05). One will expire in end of June. Other is good for year and half. I was planing on making a low gravity pale ale (OG of 1.045) in the next few weeks. Would the dry yeast that expires in end of June be OK? Or should I just go ahead and use the newer yeast...

    2 Fermentation Vessels, 1 Batch

I would go for it. If you have great sanitizing practices, the wort should be fine. I have done it before where I forgot to add yeast and my beer turned out to be fine. I would aerate again just in case too for yeast to get oxygen since it has been a few days.

Using 2nd generation Wyeast 1056 for Breakfast Stout

Yes, I used us-05 since the homebrew shop was closed and it was in the last minute.

Using 2nd generation Wyeast 1056 for Breakfast Stout

Good to know about keeping the fermentation temp above 65/66 for Wyeast 1056. Definitely do not want a peach taste for a stout :)

Using 2nd generation Wyeast 1056 for Breakfast Stout

Thank you for the answers and tips! I went ahead and used Safale 05 instead to be on the safe side since I had great results with US-05. I plan on using the harvested 1056 and make a starter for a pale ale in a few weeks.

Using 2nd generation Wyeast 1056 for Breakfast Stout

This is my very first post for HomeBrewTalk. I have been brewing beer for about 6 months and have done 5 batches so far. However, I have started using yeast starters and have a question. I plan on making a Breakfast Stout clone from a local HomeBrew shop that has the ingredients kit. I have a...
