Anyone else seen these? I hadn't -- maybe I just don't get out much...

    Kolsch hop help

So what ever happened with this? I'm tasting a 'Red Kolsch' that was inspired by this thread. 1oz Motueka @90 0.4 Pac Jade @5min 0.6 Pc Jade whirlpool for a bit (it's a kolsch but wtf) It's good, but different. I've done this recipe before w/ saaz/sauvin and ended up with something...

    Belgian yeast in a porter?

The last few porters I've done have been w/ Belgian yeast. The first was good enough to keep experimenting with. You can get some reactions from people expecting just a plain porter flavor, and seems like it took more conditioning than a regular porter, but otherwise it's good.

1900w immersion heater element : safe to 120v?

If you have a 15A breaker, the wires are most likely 14 gauge, unless the person who wired your place was into throwing away money... Circuits for a 15A breaker are usually wired w/ #14 wire Circuits for a 20A breaker are usually wired w/ #12 wire however ... if the outlet you are...

    Beers With A Wine Influence

A while back I did a "Red Kolsh" w/ wine friends in mind: No wine. Kolsh recipe but added < 4 oz each of Cara Red, Chocolate Wheat and Roasted Barley (in 6.5 Gal) for the 'red.' Bittered w/ Motueka and finished w/ Nelson Sauvin and finally slight oak. The wine lovers who "didn't really care...

question on whirlpool rest and techniques

You whirlpool - because you can - 15 min or so before flameout to sanitize the whirlpool / run-off circuit - to immersion-chill much faster than if you're wort weren't moving - in order to collect solids in the center of your pot - in order to extract late hop flavors between 155-185...

Looking for a change in IPA yeast-ideas?

Hmm -- no one has mentioned Kolsch yeast (WLP029) yet for an IPA? It's fantastic in an otherwise clean but hop-forward IPA. Around here we've been calling 029 "The Gamechanger."

Sample tasted great, 4 weeks later not so much

I got frustrated by lack of hop aroma in my bottled beer and solved it by eliminating oxygen -- it wasn't that hard: At the time I wasn't kegging but I got my hands on a CO2 tank and using a "standard carboy cap" (google it) I purged oxygen from the target container before moving and then...

    Stc-1000+

Without the circulation pump the temps really stratify inside -- like more than 5F. I noticed this informally but doing a formal study w/ a bunch of sensors might be the next arduino project (and challenge as I'm not a hardware person). Circulating the water w/ a quiet $12 fountain pump, the...

    Stc-1000+

Yes, I flashed a 12V STC and run it off of the power supply of the "IceProbe" ( a 12V peltier chiller). The STC wired to a DPDT relay reverses current to the IceProbe to heat when needed. A rectifier keeps the fan going in the right direction whether heating/cooling. There is a tiny fountain...

Just wanted chip in my $0.02 of praise for alphaomega and this project. You're a freakin' genius and are due a ton of thanks and even more beer (fermented under strict temp control of course). I went out, bought an arduino, pins and wires. Everything worked great and I'm now running 1000+...

Anyone Use Kolsch Yeast For IPA??

I just did with amazing results: one of those 'best beer ever' beers: Extreme hop aroma, not super bitter, malts the way I wanted, but to my astonishment, that wine-like-apple-but-not-fruity kolsch flavor just shines INTENESLY right up through it all. I kept hearing that one wrong step and...

    Confession Time

I think most people like their beer over-carbonated and too cold. I usually drink beer out of a wine glass.

Does anyone start to heat up their first runnings while they are batch sparging?

Not if First Wort Hopping which depends on the lower temperatures.

Simple 2 Stage Fermenter Temp Control for Small Studio (Cooler / Peltier / Ice Probe)

Chain up a second one w/ the pump pumping from one to the other and then a fairly large piece of tubing siphoning a return. I actually did this once, but not w/ two active fermentations at the same time. Not elegant looking but it worked.
