Hi to all, I'd like a piece of advice from someone inn the know if possible please. I recently got hold of a fridge and have a pair of lagers in there fermenting away at 11.5c (52f). Now they've been in there for 3 weeks and have got to 1020 and 1018 respectively one Is a Vienna lager and the...
You need a fridge or freezer connected to a temp controller I use an stc1000 along with a heat source I use a budget hair dryer. Then you can set the temp controller to a set point with a small +- range allowing you to set and keep a fermentation temp.
Surely the paint can trick only works with old style incandescent light bulbs. Here in the uk those have been banned, we now have to get the crappy little fluorescent ones or halogen or led.
I use a hairdryer hooked up to an stc1000 in my brew fridge and it works a treat. There's a Maris otter and saaz lager and a Vienna lager both in there at the moment. The stc is set at 11.5 o c with a +-0.5 so it sits there between 11 and 12 o c. I'd thoroughly recommend the hairdryer route get...
Other have success at reducing temp by wrapping a towel or large cloth around the fermenter and making this wet with part of it in a bowl of water then turn a fan on it. The evaporation draws cool water into the fabric helping to cool the beer.
Good luck to everyone whose in the path of this. From my side of the Atlantic this thing looks a nightmare. Jeez in England the country grinds to a halt with a few inches of snow can't imagine what would happen with a storm like this.
Hey, similar over here in the UK I started in the same with a Coopers kit and kilo, an extract or 2 and then into biab although at the moment I don't have any desire to move to 3vessel brewing I like KISS and biab does that for me.
Thanks for the welcome Ed. I do use Jims sometimes as well as the Aussie biabrewer site which is a gold mine with some really helpful folks. The only downer with that site though is the 12hr wait for UK to Aus communication delay.
