    RIMS for Dummies

Thanks - I just ordered the $24 piece you mentioned, this is exactly what I was looking for. Sometimes coming up with the right google keywords to search is a challenge :)

    RIMS for Dummies

What is the consensus for capping the heating element side of the RIMS tube? I have seen PVC suggested, but is that the best option? If PVC, what is the best way to affix the cap to the tube? This is the last portion of my build before I am able to fire the RIMS tube up. I've tried to find...

    Exactly...sorry for not being clear.

    List of PJ Electrical Diagrams

P-J: On this one, if the RIMS is 1500W, could I use one conventional wall outlet to power both the pump & RIMS by breaking the tab on the hot side of the outlet? That would reduce some of the wiring required and make the build a little cleaner for me. If that is possible, would I need to wire...

    List of PJ Electrical Diagrams

I think I follow. To paraphrase (correct me if I'm wrong), the difference is that the the Love switch has a higher output which would allow for powering the freezer\heating element, but for a RIMS application where accuracy is key it makes more sense to go with a PID.

    List of PJ Electrical Diagrams

Hi PJ - thanks for all your contributions here! I am VERY interested in building the very simplistic RIMS controller on pg 21 of the thread, but I like to understand all the rationale before building something like this. I have temp controllers set up for my kegerator and fermentation chamber...

    LHBS pittsburgh

Hi all... Need to pick up some grain in Pittsburgh ( north allegheny specifically ) and I am unfamiliar with the area. Can Anyone from around there recommend a shop? Sorry if this is a misplaced post, just in a pinch here. Thanks!

    Cheyco's CFC

I just built my CFC according to this thread and tested it tonight for the first time with boiling water. This bad boy took down 5 gallons of 212 degree water to 66 degrees within 12-15 minutes! I do not have a pump and before today did not have a valve, but after installing a weldless ball...

My First Lager - When to Start Diacetyl Rest?

My lager has been in diacetyl rest for 3 days now, with the gravity moving from 1.010 at the start to 1.005 currently. Tonight I took a sample and ran a diacetyl test as described in "yeast." I'm no diacetyl connessuier but I do detect an off aroma and taste that is slightly sweet and upfront...

My First Lager - When to Start Diacetyl Rest?

Thanks Yooper. That makes sense and good advice for the next lager. On this one, the temp was down to 50 within only a few hours so hopefully the temp change was fast enough to avoid the side effects you mention.

My First Lager - When to Start Diacetyl Rest?

Thanks for the replies! I have the temp now at 65, and I actually have a starter going with harvested pacman that I was going to use for another brew, but could be re-purposed if needed. On another note, I wasn't expecting to have such high attenuation so quickly given the lower temperature...

My First Lager - When to Start Diacetyl Rest?

This thread seems like the right place for my question. I brewed my first lager a week ago, pitched a crapload of yeast and the beer has been fermenting at 50F for a week now. I took my first sample this evening and the gravity is already down to 1.011 ... I think I should be happy but I'm...

    First starter question/panic

Most of my starters do not show activity for about 24hrs, but then ferment out very quickly. I think you'll be fine for Saturday. You can let it ferment through Friday evening, stick it in the fridge overnight, decant & pitch the next day.

New to Lagering - Noob Question

Wow - I have a lot to learn about lager yeast. I had thought it was the same as ales, just different temperatures.

New to Lagering - Noob Question

Clearly I am showing my inability to use the tool correctly. Yes, it shows 2 packages of liquid starter. Should I get another vial at LHBS and add to the starter this evening?
