New post a picture of your pint

Here's a lager I did a couple of months ago during the summer. A simple Saaz-y lager with Weyermann Eraclea pilsner malt and some corn sugar to keep it light bodied. It was very refreshing. And here's an ale I was drinking in Spring before I started on the lagers. This one's Eraclea malt...

Why are there so many different yeast options?

Yeasts (particularly with ales) are arguably the most important contributors to beer flavour. After all, all you do is make wort. The yeast makes beer.

    Bass Pale Ale Original?

No wonder that our ancestors were permanently inebriated! Yes the brew-length of each recipe is 1 imperial gallon. Multiply by 1.2 to get to US gallons. The recipes were sourced from Old British beers and how to make them. I bought the paperback but there's a cheaper downloadable edition that...

    Bass Pale Ale Original?

Recipes are per imperial gallon. If you're looking to emulate the style then you'd probably want to try to source some heritage malt such as Crisp Chevallier.

Now i'll know when i have a leak!

Sounds like it's OK so far. The reason I asked is that I also thought it'd be a good idea to sit the cylinder on a cheap set of bathroom scales so I'd be able to see as it approached the 'tare weight' stamped on the cylinder. I haven't done it yet though.

Now i'll know when i have a leak!

Please let us know if your scales still read zero when you eventually take the keg off. I don't think you're supposed to leave weights on a strain gauge long term.

    Water profile for English Pale.

Yellow or amber balanced work well for me.

Brewing with flaked corn (maize). Efficiency?

I'm planning a light lager recipe that's going to have around 20% Crisp flaked, torrefied maize. Looking at the datasheet I can see it has a high extract potential - 86.5% equates to 1.040 in Beersmith. This is higher than base malt. The thing is, the Brulosophy folks (link) tried brewing with...

    Buffalo 3kw hob getting hot

Always use "hot condition" leads and plugs with electric boilers. Never just grab the nearest computer or kettle lead. They're not meant to be "on" for long periods.

    Missed OG by a lot!!

My rule of thumb is to knock 10% off my efficiency expectations and run my recipe through the spreadsheet that @doug293cz wrote to see if my sparge is big enough.

Dry yeasts identified - your opinions please!

Well they could just order a pack on Ebay like everyone else! :D

    Does 2019 Nelson Exists?

Crossmyloof in the UK have 100g packs of 2019 Nelson Sauvin in stock and their shipping prices to the US aren't too bad. You can always take the opportunity to stock up on some of our English hops while you're there; they're rather good you know :)

    I need to vent.

Cable tie around the bit of the rubber handle nearest the gas post with GAS written on it has worked for me even at my most slow-witted.

Help tracking down a gas leak

The regulators that I've seen will vent through the body if you turn them back beyond zero to where the knob feels loose. This can be a very short distance, worth checking that. It could also be leaking through the regulator body when it shouldn't. I had one that did that.

    Gelatin methods?

It'll work at room temperature but is likely to be slower. I use a two-part kieselsol/gelatin fining in the keg. One part goes in first, I transfer room-temperature beer on top of it then add the second part as I come towards the end of the fill. The end result after a couple of weeks carbing at...
