    Yoopers stout on nitro

I've put Yooper's oatmeal stout on nitro twice now. It's fantastic! In fact I have another batch of it awaiting keg space for this!

    Auto siphon leaks air

I bought an auto-siphon about one year ago and it took me two or three brews to figure out the kinks. After making a couple adjustments, even with the small leak at the seal I haven't had any more problems. The first issue was I think similar to your experience and I had a very difficult time...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

Terrific, thanks! I don't know how I missed that!

    Low Mash Efficiency

Doug, thanks for the detailed info! That's a really helpful overview of contributing factors and the viscosity graph makes total sense. I almost always mash at 1.25-1.5 qts/lb mainly due to the size of my cooler. I'm curious now to try closer to 2 and see what happens. The problem is either...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

Yeah, I scaled to 3.8 based on the amount of grain I can fit in my mash tun. I targeted 1.09 OG without sugar added because that's what I thought the recipe called for (which was the reason for the ridiculous boil). So what was the actual target original gravity before and after added sugar...

120v 2000W, will a longer element or narrower pot inprove boil?

Interesting! Aside from the volatile compounds, though, are alpha acid extraction and protein coagulation functions of the vigorous boil or just temperature? And do those of us at altitude have to correct for poorer extraction due to lower temp boil?

Wow, thanks for the response! This one's definitely going in the que...

    Low Mash Efficiency

Do you know how much the temp dropped during the mash? It sounds like you were using a direct fire mash tun which was probably uninsulated? You may have ended up 5-10 deg under your starting temp over an hour. Sparging with 155 would not have been enough to heat things up at the end so you...

Sweet Stout Narwhal's Lactation (Chai Tea Milk Stout)

I was planning a chai stout to brew pretty soon, this looks awesome! I had a recommendation to put 1-2 packets in secondary, any thoughts on the effects of adding the tea packets in the mash vs. other times?

120v 2000W, will a longer element or narrower pot inprove boil?

Maybe this isn't the right thread for this, but why do you want a vigorous boil other than boil-off to bump your gravity? Boiling temps are only 204-205 (unknown measurement error?) for me in the mountains, anyway. With my 3500 watt induction burner, I could achieve volcanic boiling with 7.5...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Westvleteren 12 Clone - Multiple Award Winner

Thank you CSI and everyone else for posting such great information about this recipe! I just brewed this on Oct 11 and I'm super excited to see how it turns out! In my excitement I think I misunderstood the target gravity, though. I hit pre-boil of 1.063 and boiled for 135 min to bring it up...

    Russian imperial stout aging

Sounds great! I may have to follow with part of my batch next week. I really liked the 1.09-1.02 finish in the last one, but I think I might try increasing OG and mashing higher for a slightly sweeter finish this time. Might go nicely with some coffee actually.
