    100% barke munich dunkel

So I picked up a sack of Barke Munich with the intent of making some beers with a high percentage of it. Though to this point I’ve just just it in smaller amounts. For those with experience using this malt in higher percentages(such as in Dunkels and Doppelbocks), how have things fared with...

    Who uses English hops?

As someone who enjoys English ales, I have been looking at expanding beyond the Fuggle/EKG realm of English hops. I’m not really a huge fan of C hops, and honestly I am somewhat picky in how I take EKG(especially late additions) sometimes. I do enjoy Fuggles and think the cilantro allusion is...

A good recipe for my first BIAB?

What kind of system will you be using(cooler mash tun, heated all in one, three vessel, etc)? Generally I would recommend something with a relatively moderate gravity, like 1.045-1.050. This will give you a chance to get to know your system with a recipe with a relatively smaller grain bill...

    Electric System Build Hardware

Finally made some more progress, drilled some holes using Bobby’s tungsten bits. Took it easy and got the four holes I needed done without too much trouble. I had a bulkhead that I thought would work for my thermometer, but it’s too big. Once I get that replaced and give everything a good...

do all roads lead to hazies.

I’ve never really cared for them myself, but if that’s someone else’s thing more power to you. Before I started brewing I was a porter/stout guy. While I still enjoy those sometimes my go tos now are lagers(pils, Dunkel, anything really) and UK ales. To me it would seem road often lead to lagers

Newbie Questions about Whirlpool and Chilling

Hey @Dland I have been wondering about doing exactly what you describe, chilling initially with IC then finishing with a PC. Could you briefly describe you process for this as far as how you deal with the PC? My biggest hangup is dealing with sanitation but avoiding hop matter going in. Been...

    Everything tastes like C hops?

Ive heard of this being done, it’s also described in The Homebrewer’s Almanac. Been wanting to tap some of the maples at my place and try it but haven’t gotten around to it. Brewing Nordic also talks about doing it with birch. Never would have considered a pilsner with it. I had a couple beers...

    Fat washed spirit addition

Some follow up having washed some Rum and just sampling that. It smells great, very strong fresh coconut aroma. Almost 1:1 from the raw oil on its own. Amazing really. Flavor is not as strong, but what is there is very good. I tasted some of the oil and it more aromatic than flavorful. I...

Help an old dog learn some of the new tricks

Another idea for AIO decocting. You could mash as normal in the vessel, and run that off completely. Fill with what would’ve been your sparge water, and decoct as desired. Once done add your first runnings back and proceed.

    Fat washed spirit addition

Thanks for pointing that out! I just checked and luckily I do have unrefined oil. Yes the subtlety was on my mind too, especially when I’m not seeing anyone else do it really(with beer). I think I’ll sample on its own at first, and then try dosing a single beer. If it is viable from there I...

    First keezer build

Great job! I’ve been kegging for a few years using faucet adapters on kegs in a normal fridge. Hoping to build something like this soon!

    Fat washed spirit addition

I also probably should have clarified I’m going to do the wash with coconut oil not flakes. I’ll try to pick up some rum this weekend to do some research with!

    Fat washed spirit addition

@Dgallo It is similar to a tincture in that you are combining spirits with the flavoring component, but I’d say they are still different processes. @day_trippr Google search has it right. My specific interest in doing this with coconut is to avoid some of the concerns from flaked coconut as...

    Fat washed spirit addition

Curious if anyone has ever tried fat washing a spirit, and then doing something like adding it at packaging? I have this idea in my head for a couple of things, such as washing rum that has steeped in some other things with coconut and adding to an oatmeal stout. But I’m not sure if the flavor...

    Ten gallon logistics

Edited to remove double quote. Great response, thank you! Im building out an electric BIAB system, so plan to use a hoist to pull the bag. 5500w burner should help with some of the time considerations on the hot side. Ironically the same day I started this post I also started this one talking...
