Long Time Fly Sparger, First Time Batch

So this question has been troubling me for some time now. I'm making the jump to Partial Mash on my next batch to give me a feel for the process before going AG. I have been using Beersmith to tweak my recipe calcs for the PM and have done a ton of research on HBT and concluded that I would do 3...

Partial Mash Oatmeal Stout - Recipe & Process Critique

I was planning on performing the iodine/iodophor test anyway so I'll be checking at the 45 & 60 minute marks. I'll go longer until I have conversion.

Partial Mash Oatmeal Stout - Recipe & Process Critique

Thanks for the advice Yooper. I made the corrections and all my numbers hit. The oats I'm using are flaked and it is my understanding that they were already gelantized(?) so that the conversion would be easier. Is this not the case, in your experience? axr

Partial Mash Oatmeal Stout - Recipe & Process Critique

Hey Homebrewers- This is my first partial mash and I'm pretty amped to be progressing towards AG brews. I'd like to get some input on this recipe from those familiar with the PM process and from those who have made Oatmeal Stouts. Really interested in getting input on the mash process. I'm...

    yeast starter size

hey homebrewers- I've been using yeast starters on my last two batches (Hefe and APA) and am PO'd that I didn't do this sooner. Great results - minimal lag time, awesome ferments and great tasting beer. Anyway, I've been searching through the forums for an answer to the following: Can I...

    Immersion Chiller Idea Using Kegerator

+1 on the submersible pump idea. I use this one from Northern Tool (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_792_792) in a HD bucket with water and I get about 4 bags of ice and I'm able to drop temp down to ~75F in 15-20mins. Don't get a fountain/aquarium pump...many times they don't have...

temp for American Hefe Yeast (WLP320)

I recently brewed a Hefe using this yeast and fermented at ~66-67F for about 2 weeks and let it bottle condition for 2 more. I selected it because of the muted banana/clove esthers and it didn't let me down. I think if you ferment at 58F it will be too cold for this yeast strain. I brewed a...

    Magnum Hops

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread but got a Magnum hops related question. I plan on brewing a full boil APA tomorrow (sort of Anchor Liberty clone) using Magnum hops (13.1%; .65oz) as the bittering hop for 60min. I plan on using Cascade hops for the flavor and aroma (6.1%; .5oz addition at...

MLT manifold build question - 1/2" vs. 5/8"

Hey homebrewers- I'm getting ready to build my MLT manifold for my rectangualr cooler and found all the info I needed from searching the threads here on HBT. The only thing I wasn't able to locate is information regarding copper tube size. I know close to 95% of all manifolds use 1/2" tube...

    Float ball for sight glass

How about breaking apart a childrens rattle and using one of those little balls? It's prbably not dissimilar to what is found in coffee maker float. Might be super cheap (free) if you have a kid in the house. And to prevent it from falling into the wort, you use a fine mesh screen between the...
