I'm sure this is numerous places on the net but after searching I litterally couldn't find it.
How much volume does a pound of liquid malt extract lend to the wort volume? How much does a pound of dry extract lend to the wort?

Thanks a bunch!

My last couple batches had 6lb of LME and that filled a 1/2 gallon jug, so 64oz. By that, each pound will add about 10.5oz liquid volume.

Don' know about DME.

It will depend on density which is in turn dependent primarily on air content (how tightly packed it is). As this is quite variable, you have two different answers already.

Moisture can also effect the weight, but extract is standardized to a specific moisture content unless you've opened it.

So get a scale, they're not expensive.

Edit: I just realized you meant how much volume it adds when it's actually in the wort. It's definitely a lot less than when dry but I can't give you a good answer.

If you take 1 lb LME, and make it up to 1 gallon, you will end up with 1 gallon of 1.037 wort. This will weigh 8.3453 * 1.037 = 8.654 lbs
As you added 1 lb LME to the water, you would have added 7.654 lbs water which is 0.917 gallons, so the LME takes up a volume of 10.6 oz

If you add 1 lb DME to water and make it up to 1 gallon, you will end up with 1 gallon of 1.046 wort. This will weigh 8.3453 * 1.046 = 8.729 lbs.
As you added 1 lb DME to the water, you would have added 7.729 lbs water which is 0.926 gallons, so the DME takes up a volume of 9.5 oz

ok, so between ~9.5-10.6oz for LME which is mainly what I was wondering.
Thanks for everyone's weigh in (no pun intended!)
