There are a lot of threads on this throughout the site. I would suggest using the search function for this using "water jug" or something like that. Some people do ferment in them from what I can tell and they are completely food/safe but people worry that they are air permeable and would allow oxidation of the beer. This would cause off flavors in the beer described by people as "cardboard" like. I have no idea how good they actually are for a fermenter.
 
What does the bottom of the jug say?

A google search (which also turned up this thread :p) indicates their 5 gallon jugs are #1 PETE, which, IIRC, is OK for beer.

Right?

ETA: yeah, #1 PETE jugs are the same plastic as Better Bottles. I need to track a couple of those jugs down.
