I was at a sub sandwich restaraunt and saw that they sell their used 5 gallon pickle buckets for $2. They are airtight and food grade. I was thinking i could clean and drill an airlock hole in the lid so i could use this as another fermenter. This is just thinking, but does anyone have any ideas as to whether this would work or any ideas to get rid of the strong dill pickle smell?

pickles are made with vinegar and I have heard that you should never use any container for brewing that has had vinegar...so I wouldn't take the chances of ruining your brew....most of the 5 gallon buckets that you can buy at hardware stores are made from food grade plastic...

I also don't think you will ever be able to get enough of the pickle smell out to be happy about putting beer in it. Could be nice to have around for brew day non-beer purposes.

I've never tried to brew with them, but in my experience, the pickle smell will just never come out of plastic.

I picked up a couple for a friend to use in reloading his ammo and after using cleaner, bleach soaking, and sitting in sunlight the smell was still so overpowering that he couldn't even keep them in the garage.

Pickle buckets can be very useful in homebrewing!

All you have to do is take the bucket, invert it by roughly 180 degrees and place it on the ground.

Then you can sit on it while you wait for your wort to boil.
