Smoked Beers - BJCP Tasting Workshop

From our virtual BJCP tasting workshop last Wednesday. Jeff Whelpley 's excellent notes on smoked beers and my scoresheets on two examples from Dovetail Brewery.

In my opinion, Dovetail's Piwo Grodziskie is world class. A historical style from Poland, it is light, dry, low ABV, and the smoke is delicate, soft and rounded, not at all harsh.

I was really surprised at the score you gave initially, and then we tasted the beers. The grodziskie was a perfect representation of the style!

I was at Schlenkerla a year or two ago, and grew to love the smoked beers they served. After visiting the malt house (Weyermann), I found that knowing more about the Bamberg beers really made me appreciate them. Still, I thought a rauchdopplebock would be way too odd for me. It turns out that the balance of that smokiness with the sweet dopplebock was a winner.

I am learning so much from these tastings.
