I was discussing mead with my dad (who I got my interest in fermentation from) and he recommended this forum to me. I'm going to start a batch of mead in the near future, and I'm thinking about a batch of perry, if I can get enough pears. Any tips and tricks you'd be willing to give a (relative) newbie would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome, from another Minnesotan!

Try small, 1 gallon batches to start off. Equipment is simple--a gallon jug, stopper and airlock. Small batches allow you to experiment with ingredients and methods, with minimal costs. Get the basics down, then work from there.

You can make decent cider from store-bought juice, too. Search for "Edwort's Apfelwein." There's a huge thread on that here.
