Had the basement finished recently and wanted to do something interesting for a door leading into the area below the laundry room. It was supposed to be a storage room, but the kids have claimed it as their secret play area. I decided to see if I could build a secret bookshelf door. I don't have many tools, borrowed a mitre saw and drill press and figured most of the design out while I was making it. The part that took longest was determining which hinges to use.
I built the frame on the ground and added the shelves to it. I used pine since it's fairly light and wouldn't stress the hinges too much. The last picture shows the book you pull to open the gate latch. I added an emergency hatch for when my little one gets stuck inside and the mechanism fails, I didn't want to have to break it apart.
It's not perfect, but I definitely learned some skills for when I do it again.
Apologies for the rotated pics, I'm posting from my phone.
