Beer to Use for Experimenting

What's a good beer to use for experimenting with adding flavors? I want to small scale adjust a tea and trial it in an off the shelf beer. The Tea will ultimately get added to a 5 gallon batch at bottling. Just want to play with mixes ahead of time first and will adjust addition as needed at bottling.

I'd think it would be a commercial beer of the style you're going to brew.
