I considered naming this thread "What Size is YOUR Bunghole".:D

I am putting together my kit and when it came time to buy the carboy bung I got confused. All the stoppers are listed as "drilled" or not and have a number corresponding to size. Also, while reading threads I've seen people using all sorts of creative fermenters. Everything from 1gal milk jugs, to gallon wine bottles, to gallon glass milk jugs etc. So what fits what?

What size stoppers fit what containers?

Are all drilled stoppers the same? (what about blow off tubes?)

What creative containers have you used and were they any good?

The 3 gallon plastic Absopure bottles I use for apfelwine fit a drilled #10. I was under the impression all carboys could fit #10 and thats why I picked #10. Though seewala is making me think I just got lucky.

Better Bottles are #11. One gallon jugs and 1/2 gallon growlers are almost always #6. Wine and beer bottle bottles use very small bungs- I think a #3, but I'm not 100% sure (since it's so small I can't even see that number!)

"Regular" carboys are #7.

One thing that works well is one of those "universal caps". They fit Better Bottles, and all the carboys except for the 1 gallon and 6.5 gallon sizes. Here's a picture: http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/carboy-caps.jpg of the carboy caps. Here's the universal bung: http://www.northernbrewer.com/pics/fullsize/carboy-bungs.jpg

FWIW, I've taken rubber bungs that were too large for container openings and re-sized them to fit with a belt sander in a pinch.

I make 6 gallon batches and use a couple 1/2 gallon liquor bottles for the extra gallon. After a week or so and the risk of blow off is over I pour them into my primary bucket. I get to fill a keg and a few bottles that way.

thanks for the info, everybody. i was given a bunch of growlers and thought i'd do a few micro batches. will need my #6 bungs, it seems...
