where did the wine go?

I went to rack what i thought was 5 gal of apfelwein from my primary to secondary today and i had lost about a gal. started this batch 11-5-08 with 5 gal of juice and after racking today i only have about 4 gal left. i have kept ferm. temps in the mid 60's... i don't know where it went any insight?

You will always lose some to racking, since you can't siphon it all if you avoid getting the lees. But you definitely shouldn't have lost a gallon.

Having said that, how have you been acting. Testing a bit too often? haha

Are both your primary and secondary the same size, or do you only think so?

primary is 7.9 ale pail, secondary is 5 gal bb. but i put 5 one gal jugs in the primary plus sugar so it was a little over 5 gal to start...
