I was planning on ordering a few hops i need to make the 60 min extract clone. I've been wanting to make a RYE Ipa. I came up with this recipe on beersmith. any feedback will be appreciated. I am new to making my own recipes. I originally had LME but decided to try all DME. ? I'm new to beersmith so my info might be a bit off but I can boil 4 gal safely and possibly would top up to 5.5gal or so to be able to bottle or keg 5 gal.
Thanks for all your help !

I'm a bit confused. You led with LME vs DME, but this recipe is all grain with no extract?

The OP seems to have forgotten to ask a question. Perhaps the OP wanted to know how to convert all grain to extract.

Sorry I confused myself.. Long day. I was debating on trying to get away from the lme and using dme instead. Or possibly doing a partial mash. I eventually want to get to all grain.

I was bouncing bw recipes I meant to put the dme for the start not grain

So is that your question - how to convert this to extract? The only place I have seen rye extract is northern brewer, and it's LME. Their mix is 70% pale 20% rye and 10 % C40. Kinda close to your grainbill if you want to just use their mix it would be about 7lbs LME.

Alternatively for partial mash you could do something like 2 lb pale, 2 lb rye, 8 oz C-120 and 3 lb light DME.

I don't think your current recipe is going to get you what you want. A generic IPA profile is an OG in the 1.060 range and IBU in the 60+ area. At 1.043 and 24IBU, you are going to have a much weaker beer that isn't very bitter.

IMO, you need to bump up the gravity and add a high AA hop at 60 minutes to get in the proper range. You'll also want to up that dry hop amount if you want something with commercial levels of aroma. I usually do 3oz in a 5 gallon batch.

Like the others, my initial reaction was, "This is an IPA? Where are the hops?"

That's not nearly enough hops for an IPA. Use an ounce of Warrior or Magnum at 60 minutes for your bittering. Then at least 3 ounces of the Cascade and/or Falconer's Flight spread across the last 30 minutes. Then at least a couple of ounces again to dry hop.

Sorry to confuse everyone. My goal is to make a extract or,pm recipe that is a rye ipa. I didn't realize the rye dme issue. A lme would work. And I agree I should bump up the hops. I appreciate everyone's insight. I'm gonna try and mess around with the recipe this weekend. Any suggestions will always be greatly appreciated. It's a great learning process

For the grainbill you could go 9 lb of the rye extract, or the partial mash as I described above but with 5 lb DME. Let us know what you come up with.

i moved a few things around. i couldn't get the northern brewer lme on beersmith or the c-120's. this is what i came up with. kinda confused on my grain bill. any input will be greatly appreciated. i've gotten better with learning about the hops. grains still throw me off

I think the grainbill looks good, although now that I see the numbers plugged in with a 5.5 gallon batch you may want to go with another lb of pale malt if you can fit it (or up the DME by 1/2 lb if you can't). It's not a bad idea to have some DME on hand anyway in case you undershoot the OG from your mash. May want to adjust the IBU's up a bit too.

If you don't have C-120 you could go with a lighter crystal - just depends what you are doing for. I personally think the toffee/raisin from C-120 would go well with the rye, but if you want a little more sweetness to balance you'll want a lower L crystal.

The full lb of 120 may be a little much, I'd probably keep it at .5 or.75 lb and just use whatever brand your LHBS carries, but otherwise I think that will make a nice beer. I'd mash low like around 150.

Report back if you brew it!

i brewed this a couple months ago forgot to report here. it turned out pretty good, nice rye spice to it w/ a subtle hop characteristics. I plan on trying to brew this again. But, im going to play around on beersmith and go all grain with it!
