I have a Dry Irish Stout in the primary for just about a week. I checked the gravity and its at 1.018, the OG was 1.042 Other searches and this is coming up normal. I am going to leave it and keg it next weekend if the gravity doesn't change.

Any thoughts

It just hit me, I am using a 6.5 carboy, 5 gal batches, I do add more to the carboy so its a little more than 5 gal. could this be why its off?

That seems like a high final gravity to me especially given your original gravity. I would consider pitching another set of yeast or using yeast energizer to try to restart what may be a stuck fermentation.

I would give consideration to either using liquid yeast (wyeast or white labs) or doing a yeast starter to increase the cell count that you are pitching to increase the likelihood of getting a complete fermentation.
