The last few batches I have made I kept the beer in the primary for 5 or 6 weeks sitting on the yeast cake and these were then racked to kegs and conditioned for a few more weeks before drunk.

These were heavier beers in the 5-8% range - IPAs, Belgiums, etc..

Question: Are there any general guidelines for determining how long a brew should be left sitting on the yeast cake in the primary?

Just bottled a 9% Belgian which had sat on the cake for 8 weeks. It was delicious. I wouldn't go much over that though.
