When batch sparging, do I add the sparge water on top of the mash or do I drain the mash then add the sparge water?

Beersmith has me mashing in 3gal @160.4 to come to 150 for 60min. For my mash out, it says 3.50gal @185.5 to come to 168. I am using a 10 gal. rubbermaid round cooler as my mlt. So can I add the water to mash out first, stir and let sit and then drain all at once to the kettle?

here are the basic steps

vorlauf, drain mash water, add 1/2 of sparge water, stir VERY well, let sit for a few, vorlauf, drain, add second 1/2 of sparge water, stir VERY well, let sit for a few, vorlauf, drain, brew
