Hello everyone I've been doing the whole mr beer kit for sone time and now stepping up to 5 gallon batches. I found the following two turkey fryer kits but kind of torn between the two. Trying to not ruin the kitchen and figured both kids go for price of a single pot so why not...the home depot kit is $60 aluminum 7.5 gallon pot without a safety time while the SAMs club one is $85 7.5 gallon stainless steel with a timer. Maybe some of you can give me some opinions on the two.

Thanks much appreciated

There are pros and cons to using both stainless and aluminum. Here is a link to one such discussion.

I am assuming you will extract brewing, so in that case either will be fine for your five gallon batches (size wise that is). It will really all come down to personal choice and how much you are willing to spend. In my opinion I would go with the stainless as it is only a $25 difference. Just remember that if you do end up getting the aluminum that you should boil some water in it before you use it for brewing to build up a passive oxide layer in the pot (I have also heard you can just throw it in the oven to do the same thing). Here is a good podcast on the Brewing Network about metals. Listen to this as it may give some more insight on how metals react with brewing (http://thebrewingnetwork.com/shows/Brew-Strong/Brew-Strong-09-29-08-Metals-that-Affect-Your-Beer).

Good luck and welcome to HBT!

I have the Brinkmann from Home Depot. The pot is just big enough for 5 gallon batches. I start with about 6.5 gallons for a 60 minute boil. You have to be very careful at the start of the boil so it does not go over the edge of the pot.

I have since gotten 10 gallon stainless steel pots and a Bayou Classic SP10 propane burner. It is much faster to heat the wort. I now use the turkey fryer to heat my water in the HLT.

I also do not worry about aluminum. If you boil water in it to create an oxidation layer you should have no problems. I still use my aluminum pot occasionally and can tell no difference from brews in the steel pot.

On the Brinkmann there is a heat sensor switch. Disconnect the wires from the switch and connect the ends together and the flame will not cut off.

I don't know anything about the other one.

Kh54s10....Did you happen to have any luck cooking on the brinkman with a bigger pot???
