So I have been using a refractometer for the last 4 batches and using a scale found on the Internet that seems to differ from a brewing friends. Does anyone know of a good approved scale of switching my Brix reading over to an OG? Also is it true you cannot use a refrac to measure FG?

Multiply brix by 4 and you'll be pretty close. And yes it's true that readings aren't accurate after fermentation begins. I use a hydrometer for my FG readings. Besides, I want to taste the beer at that point anyway.

I agree. Also, there are calculations to correct refractometer readings during fermentation (ie-alcohol has been made) but nobody seems to agree on their accuracy.

Ditto

1.040 = 10 brix

Wort:

Brix/1.04=Degrees Plato.

Fermenting wort:

1. Alcohol By Volume
ABV=(277.8851-277.4(SG)+0.9956(R) +0.00523(R2)+0.000015(R3)) X (SG/0.79)

2. Specific Gravity
SG=1.001843-0.002318474(OG)-0.000007775(OG2)-0.000000034(OG3)+0.00574
(R)+0.00003344(R2)+0.000000086(R3)

Accuracy: .2° Plato/ 0.0008 SG/ .25% ABV

Where:
ABV=Percent Alcohol by Volume
SG=Specific Gravity of the Beer (In SG units)
R=Refractometer Reading of the Solution (In Brix)
OG=Original Gravity of the Beer (In Degrees Plato)
