Hi,
I'm new here. Been brewing beer about a year but I'm trying cider now. I will be heating my juice instead of using camden tablets. My question is, to cool the juice before pitching my yeast can I use the copper chiller I use for beer? Will the apple juice react badly with the copper? It should only have contact with the copper for approx. 15 minutes.

Thanks for your help.

Chris

Heating cider is not desirable because if it gets too hot it will not clear and it potentially changes the flavor. That's why most everyone uses chemicals to kill the wild yeasts.

That said, I would not anticipate the copper being a problem, but the acid may corrode it and make it not useable in the future. Perhaps cleaning it really well may prevent corrosion. but that is just my theory.
