I have a Northern Brewer nut brown kit, and I also would like to try and brew my first pumkin ale(after reading so much about it on here). anyway I was wondering if this would work as a base for the pumpkin ale? or should I use something else? I'll probably end up trying it because thats the best part about homebrewing, if it doesnt work out, who cares. I guess I'm just looking for some advice.

It should work very well. I'm working on a pumpkin ale recipe and originally considered a brown ale, but decided to go with a porter.

what recipee are you guys using for your "harvest" beers ?

I would love to recreate some shipyard pumpkinhead ale...but I'm afraid it would be a pretty expensive batch...

If you are not into making your own recipes yet, I'd try Yuri's Thunderstruck Pumpkin ale or RichBrewer's Pumpkin ale in the recipe section. While I cannot personally vouch for either one, they both get rave reviews. My pumpkin ale is going to be more of a winter beer, because by the time I brew it, it probably won't be ready until X-Mas.

illnastyimpreza,

recreating a pupmkinhead is what my pumpkin brew was initially attempting. I looked around on shipyard's website and found it is a wheat ale, so I based mine on wheat. But unlike pumpkinhead, I'm actually using pumpkin in mine.

really... so their beer doesn't actually have ANY pumpkin in it ?? :p

Last fall I made a great pumpkinless pumpkin ale. I added oak and its probably the best beer I have made.
