Ok, my soon to be father-in-law works for an alcohol distributor. He has come across 1 for sure, possibly 2, oak wine barrels that he can get for free. He thinks they are 55 gal (or something close) each and in excellent condition. I'm not sure what I would use them for being that large but should I just jump on these and worry about what to use them for later?

I know 15 gallon oar barrels go for several hundred dollars. I'd imagine big ones would be worth more. I'd take them if I were you

Used oak wine barrels run anywhere from $40-125 depending on red/white, US/French, etc. 15 gallon barrels are expensive because there's no volume.

I'd say you'd have a lifetime supply of oak chunks for IPAs and barleywines.

I just picked up a 60 gallon French Oak Barrel for a friend in Oregon. He's a member of the Cascade Brewers' Society in Eugene and they plan on doing a bulk brew to fill it. I picked it up for $85.00, so yes, I'd say free is a VERY good price.
