So I bought my first stir plate: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OSX2Q0/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

The thing is loud. Even without the bar on it it is just really loud. Checked feet/level surface and the noise is coming from inside of it. It also isn't pulling any kind of vortex, even at max speed.

Should I just scrap this thing and do the swish method? I'm afraid that running it at full speed is just beating the yeast to death and not doing anything to make the starter better than swishing every few hours. Any input is appreciated.

Edit: The starter is swirling so I know the bar is moving.

Edit: Upon further work I found that there is was a plastic blob from the manufacturing process that the magnet carousel was hitting that was producing the noise. I get a small (maybe an inch) vortex so am I just beating the yeast or stick with it?

Final Edit: I let it run all night and the yeast seem fine. Post closed.
