Causes of a coppery off flavor?

One of my friends was talking about a local brewery that produced beers that occasionally produced a strange off-flavor. Usually they were fine, but occasionally some of their batches had a strange off flavor; coppery, like putting a penny in your mouth. Any idea what the cause might be?

John Palmer says it could be improperly stored malt or a source of soluble metal in one of their tanks.

I think Urban Dictionary may have a plausible source, also. Look up "tastes like pennies."

I've gotten that flavor when I used canned LME, but I can't imagine a brewery is buying LME in 3.3 pound cans.

Iron in a water supply can also cause a metallic taste.
