are you supposed to crush flaked barley?

When you put stuff like crystal malt in your grain bag, you are supposed to use a rolling pin to crack it open and whatnot (if you are too cheap to have a proper grain mill I guess).

What about stuff like flaked barley?

No need to crush flaked grains. As for the malt....it would be a good idea if you got your local shop to crush/mill them for you. If not a local shop spend the extra change to have it done from (insert online store of choice). You will get more of the flavor out of them, which is what you are going for in steeping grains.
