So I went to look at the harvested yeast that I had in
the fridge and noticed that the top of it was frozen solid.
The yeasties looked OK down below the frozen part, but
I was wondering just how cold these little beasties could
get and still function?

Any ideas?????

I properly prepare my yeast to be frozen and it the way I bank my yeast.

In your case it would seem that the yeast itself isn't frozen, so you should be ok.
The problem comes with unprepared yeast being frozen. The yeast develops ice crystals, which being sharp, rupture the cell walls, destroying it.

I keep yeast in a mason jar in my fridge at 34f for a month or so without any bad results. I just make a fresh starter with it.

Thanks!!!

My yeast should be OK then!!!!
The ice didn't get too low into
the jar that I had it in.
