for the mash ive read about 1.375 gallons of water lost, but how much usually do you lose for the sparge? i made a coleman cooler mash tun and doing my first AG this week. just trying to get an idea of how much water i should actually be heating up for sparge..

None. The grain already absorbed the water it will absorb, so it doesn't take in any more during the sparge. If you put four gallons in for the sparge, you'll get four gallons out.

In general, you can expect to lose some water due to grain absorption and dead-space in your mash tun. If you are batch sparging, after you drain your mashtun into your boil kettle, you can measure the resulting amount of wort and calculate exactly how much you need to add in one or multiple sparges.
