My parents moved from the greater Chicago area many years ago, but we still have family in the area. One of my uncles brought me the most amazing summer sausage. It was the lean, soft, garlic summer sausage sold at Bobby Nelson's Cheese Shop in Kenosha, WI.
My family plowed our way through the 2#'s my uncle gave us. I called them to order more. I was surprised a human answered the phone. I placed my order and when I explained that I'd like to know the total, as I was paying by check. The person on the other end replies "Oh it's fin. We'll just enclose a bill and you can pay after you receive it..." HUH? That's awesome.
Just wanted to give a huge plug for a mom and pop shop doing things right. For those in the area, if you haven't already, give them a shot. Their products are a celebration in your mouth.
