What amount of time does everyone recommend for steeping.

I'll be using the following for a Porter:
- 6 oz. Chocolate Malt
- 8 oz. Caramel Malt

I was told just to bring the pot up to a boil, take it off the heat (we'll have a thermometer to keep it at 170) and steep the grains for 3 minutes then to continue on with everything else. However, looking at other recipes I see people steeping for longer. Does the kind of ingredients and beer type change this time around?

I'm making last minute check to make sure everything goes smooth later.

It's subjective.

Some do as as you are planning . other fetch the water to temp (150 i think) then add the grain hold for 30 minutes then remove grain and continue.

I've never done it but I think your way is easiest.

Thanks for the reinforcement. The person we got the information from has been very helpful and reliable so far. I'll just go with what he said and blame it on him when it goes wrong :D .
