Hello there!

I'm finally going to try my very first recipe. I designed it using the trial version of BeerSmith 1.4and I'd like to make a Red Ale (I used the sugested amounts for an Irish Red Ale) and here is what I got:

Irish Red Ale

Malt extract and grains (all weyermann)

6.17 lb Pale Liquid Extract
1.54 lb Carared (20 SRM)
0.88 lb Caramunich Malt (56 SRM)

Hops

1 oz East Kent Goldings (5% 60min)
0.5 East Kent Goldings (5% 20min)
1 oz fuggles (4.5% 5min)

Misc. Ingredients:

0.25 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10min)

yeast:

1 pkg SafAle English Ale (DCL yeast #S-04)

I chose this ingredients because those are available on my nearest brewstore (There is not much variety though). With this recipe I get the following estimates for a 5gal batch:

OG 1.060
FG 1.016
Alc/vol 5.8
Color 13.9 SRM
IBUs 17.4

It seems like everything is in this style range, do you have any comments or sugestions on this recipe?

Thank you so much in advance, I hope this sounds like a good beer.

Cheers! :mug:

I just opened my Irish ale this weekend, it was my second beer and it got raves even from my Hop Head buddy.

1/2 #'s crystal 60
1/2 #'s toasted pale malt
The specialty grains above make a huge difference
2 #'s Dry amber extract
3.3 #'s Sparkling amber liquid extract
.75oz Norther brewer 10.6 AA. for 30 minutes (they were very high acid)
1oz Tettnanger for 1 minute
us 05

OG 1.050
FG 1.012
ABV 4.87
SRM 13.96
IBU's 22.1

I don't think I would less bitterness in this style. When I tasted it at bottling it was much to sweet. the carbing and aging helped.

You know y'all might try using Baird's dark crystal malt which runs a lovibond of 130L to 160L along with the 20L light crystal, and a pinch or two of black malt.

If you get an account with Northcountry Malt's website their prices are the best I've found so far even when not ordering in bulk.
