How do you predict the color of a recipe? How do the 'Brew Calculators' do it?
I have my own spreadsheet and I just multiply the malt color (L) by the quantity and divide by the volume...that gives me MCUs (Malt Color Units). Then I plug the MCU value into a quadratic equation to give me SRM. I got the quadratic by plotting corresponding (equivalent) values of MCU vs. SRM and then doing a curve fit. Seems to work OK but I wouldn't mind comparing it to other methods.
