I have a recipe that calls for Hallertau Mittelfruh. Since I only have Northern Brewer and Vanguard hops as suitable replacements, I was wondering which one will do the best job?

I really couldn't answer your question fully, but I will say that the one beer I made with Vanguard hops was over-run with an unpleasant lingering back of the throat bitterness.....I guess some people want some of that, but personally I strive to minimize that quality even in my IPA's......

I have never used Vanguard but I have read that Vanguard and Saaz are good alternates for Hallertau Mittelfruh. Dont know how it would be in your clone. Hops play such a small role in this kind of beer though, what is your IBU goal. Might not really matter what you use.
