I brewed my first American Wheat/Rye and just kegged it last night.

I used a starter made with a fresh pack of Wyeast 1010 American Wheat.

I've never used this yeast before -- the beer smells weird. Almost skunky. I used fresh pellet hops when I brewed it, and the beer wasn't subjected to light...I fermented it in the same closet I always use for that purpose. Fermentation temperature was about 64F.

Anyone else encountered this? I'm hoping it's just what that strain of yeast does. I guess we'll see how the beer turns out after it's carbonated.

When I've used the 1010 it smells very strongly of banana while actively fermenting. Once complete, taste should have the slightest pungent tinge, like most wheats have. Or at least this is typical of my wheats using this yeast.

I cant say I've ever encountered a skunky smell before. Are you sure you're not getting some mixture of banana and something else in there and confusing it for skunky?

Hope this helps.
