Hey Today I think I might have scored, possibly. A friend who booted her husband out gave me a ring and said that he had left some brew stuff at her place and did I want it before it got binned, it was a container of malt and some hops. I invisiaged a tin of malt and a few hopp pellets but in fact it was a 15lt bucket of malt and a large bag of hop flowers! But, here's the rub, the lid of the bucket of malt had cracked slightly and there is a bit of mould growing on the surface, a colony about 6-8" across and looks like the crust of a soft cheese! So..... Is this salvageable if I scrape the mould off and tip the rest into a sterile and sealable container?
Please say yes I hate wasting freebies!
Thanks Alx:confused:

Is there a date on the malt?? I'm assuming LME, anything over 6 months old will probably give you some flavors that you don't want.. The fuzzy stuff on top would kill it for me. If the hops have not been properly stored, same deal.

BUT,, ITS FREE!!

Try brewing something, after you remove the mold. See how it tastes.

BTW, bulk LME (that i'm familiar with) is not pasturized or anything before packaging and shipment.

Yeah it is a liq malt ext. the hopflowers have been in the freezer in a bag for about a year, similar time to the malt , well I might as well give it a try, take out the mould and boil up the extract and see how I go. I seem to be in an experiment phase lately anyway.
Cheers Guys

No doubt the guy had it coming but I would be worrying about the karmic implications of copping some guys brewstuff after his boss lady kicked him out. It comes a shade too close to checking a corpse for a wallet for my taste! :D

On the other hand, if I thought we all are in danger of getting what we deserve, I would be walking around wearing a lightning rod anyway!

That actually sounds like some sort of lame porno intro that Chairman Cheyco is now rewriting into his TV brew show format - please don't give him any more ideas! :D

Yeah well I was worried about the other Karmic possibilities like If I say no to this stuff will anyone offer me free brewing ingredients again! Gotta cover all your bases eh?! I don't know how this affects Karma but the husband and wife are one of my good friends parents, and I've been trading, bartering beg, borrow stealing from them for years, I'm not worried about him coming round to my place looking for year old malt either.

Good point - something, some force or power in the universe, intended for you to have free stuff. It could be incredibly risky to decline. The consequences of doing so could have been life changing. I salute your wise and well thought out decision!!
