Did a pumpkin spice ale over the weekend. OG was supposed to be ~1.090 but I ended up 20points higher at 1.110. I took a 6 gallon recipe and cut it in half for 3 gallons post boil. Just wondering if the spices being in suspension could give a false reading.

Mashed in higher than recipe called for because my current mashtun is **** and loses temp fast. Pulled first runnings and boiled the freaking piss out of it for about 45-60 minutes lost track of time. Collected 2nd and 3rd runnings with enough sparge water to hit my preboil gravity for the 60 minute boil. Took a gravity sample of the chilled wort and I can't believe that I could overshoot the OG by that much.

A hydrometer gives a reading of only what is dissolved in the solution, not what is in suspension. Unless the spices were sticking to the hydrometer and weighing it down, chances are you either had better efficiency than expected or volume was off a little.
