So I'm building a fully automated system using the brewtroller, I'll be writing some code shortly to do automatic fly sparge and it will be all setup.

Anyways, I've been throwing around idea's on how to do auto fly sparge for a while, I thought about trying to use a motorized ball valve to control the flow, but that's very non linear and hard to control, proportional valves use a lot of current and are very expensive, and paristaltic pumps tend to be pretty expensive too.... until I realized that I could build it my self from parts off ebay.

So I found my self a pump head off ebay for 35 bucks used: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160488035960&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Then got the tubing needed 10 bucks (largest it will take to make sure I have enough flow rate, this is size 18 tubing, which is rated for 2300 ml/min at 600 rpm). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230533864169&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Then I needed a motor to run the thing, the manual for the pump head says it needs 90 oz inch of torque, so I found a 20 kg cm motor (30 bucks) http://robokitsworld.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_3&products_id=216

Then I needed a power supply to run the motor (stall curren is 9.5 amps) 20 bucks http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160464875807&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Then I needed a way to control the speed, now most people would just use the turn nob that comes with this guy, but I'm going to use a 5v input that is controlled by an output of the brewtroller so I can have a feed back loop that will control the speed to what ever I program it too (20 bucks after shipping) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180560849842&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Then I snagged some 1/2 inch aluminum plate from work from their scap pile and made the motor mount, got a 1/2 inch stainless steel rod from Ace hardware and made it into a drive shaft, and used a lovejoy coupling to mate the 6mm motor shaft to the 1/2 inch drive shaft.

And the results, a pump that works very well and will do exactly what I need for automated fly sparge:
