This is my first time dry hopping. I am using pellets. What is the best way to add them to the carboy? ie...Do they need to be in a bag or ball, or can I just add the pellets right in?

Adding pellets directly to the carboy, assuming you are using a clearing tank, is going to create a mess and a bunch of vegetative matter that may get sucked up in final racking.

Can't say I agree with you Doc. I add the pellets directly and have never had a problem with picking them up during transfer. I never secondary either, it just seems like a waste of time to me. Don't put the racking device in the trub/hop material and the beer comes out clear.
