I am going to try American Pale Ale with Caramel (Classic recipes book) as my first AG batch (only did kits before). Unfortunately local shop doesn't have all the hops I would need..

The recipe has these hops:

Horizon 0.66oz @ 60 min
Centennial 0.25oz @ 10 min
Columbus 0.25oz @ 10 min
Centennial 0.50oz @ 0 min
Columbus 0.50oz @ 0 min

I am going to "substitute" by:

Columbus 0.66oz @ 60 min (or 0.75oz to get 40 IBU by beersmith)
Cascade 0.25oz @ 10 min
Columbus 0.25oz @ 10 min
Cascade 0.50oz @ 0 min
Columbus 0.50oz @ 0 min

Would this work? Not to replicate the recipe, but would it be in the range of an American Pale Ale?
I read that one should go easier on Columbus than Horizon, but Beersmith gives me lower IBU (some “dead space” numbers may be a bit off as it is my first batch).
I like beer on a bitter side in general.
Another question is 0.5oz of Columbus I will have left - would you maybe use rather than have a small leftover?

PS. Store has no Magnum or subs for Magnum hops

Either would work. These are all friendly APA hops so it's not a big deal. However, I would lessen the bittering hop addition to 0.50 oz., then strengthen the late additions, and lastly add a 1-2 oz. dryhop.

Looks fine. Bittering hops don't matter all that much - they provide mostly bitterness and not much flavor or aroma. I think going for the same IBU's for the first addition is a good idea. And cascade is a fine sub for centennial.

I would use the extra hops. You could add them in at 10 min, or make a 15 min addition (I'd throw them in at 15). Either way would probably be good.

Thank you
I will play with a beersmith a bit more, but I am glad to hear that these hops look normal :)
