OK so I tried to harvest some yeast form a bottle by pouring a few drips from the bottom into a petri dish (sterile with malt agar) and sure enough it seemed to grow. I harvested some into a starter and that seems to be going fine.

The only thing is though, looking at the dish it looks orange not the white creamy I'd usually expect. The starter also smells funny, although looks fine. I know starters often smell bad but still. The sediment in the starter looks normal too.
Anyone have anything like this before?

A starter shouldn't smell much different then fermenting beer. I haven't done bottle harvest yeast yet so I cant speak on that. I would say if your at all worried toss it better to buy another bottle of the beer and try again then waste a whole batch of beer.
