...they only got to be about 4 feet tall and then just stunted (due to my interference). Two still have some bines up and the other two are barely above ground anymore. Should I trim them down as usual for winter and try again next year, or chuck the rhizomes and start fresh?
 
Follow the vines back to where they come out of the ground and loosen the soil. If you haven't jacked with them too much this year, you should see some little buds that have formed. These will be the first to pop next Spring. More buds should have formed lower on the rhizome and those will emerge a short while after the first ones.
