A lot of sludge in primary fermenter

I am on my first brew and I checked it with the hydrometer and looks good after four days. I noticed a lot of the sludge came over during the syphoning. I used the hop pellets. Is it better to put those in the bags or better to just toss in? I am going to use the secondary fermenter so hopefully that will not come over with it. A lot is floating on the top.

I toss them in. Any "sludge" should settle out.

Dragon,

Lots of people use a stainless steel strainer to strain out the hops after the boil. If you do this make sure the beer is cooled down before you strain it.

If they are still floating around, can I strain them off the top with a strainer prior to moving to secondary fermenter?

Hop pellet debris settles out quickly. Are you sure it is hop material that is floating on top?
