Hi all,
My local hippie store has barley malt (liquid) for $1.99/lb, which is much cheaper than the typical LME locally (or online...). It's an amber/dark color, so I know it wouldn't be a good substitute for light LME, but is this OK as a substitute for darker LME, and what consequences (particularly taste) should I expect as a result?

It's organic, so it's unlikely to have nasty chemicals or additives in it...

Well, it's at least food grade, but probably not brewer's grade. The fermentability may be low and the flavor may not be as refined, but I suppose it's worth an experiment. Give it a try!

Probably a form of baker's malt and not likely to make good beer. Haven't tried it myself, but this question comes up frequently. Given the lack of followup, either people decide not to try it or they do and it is a major fail.

Well, I'll throw a cheap leftover batch on my schedule, so I should be brewing it in ~3 weeks, and I'll know another month and a half later if it's ok.

Thanks for everyone's input.
