going to get up early and start a moosehead clone sunday, I have the yeast starter running right now, but with only about 12 hours do you think there will be a big enough yeast population to make it worthwhile ?

Anything will be better than not doing a starter.

Is this a lager? And how big is the starter?

Any amount of time that you have a starter going will increase the number of yeast cells, and their activity. If you og isn't super high then you'll be fine.
