First all grain, batch sparge with stainless braid in an Igloo cube.
10 gal batch
18 lbs of grain
149* mmash temp

11.5 gallons in the kettle (+ 1.8 qt for absorption, call it 2qt) 48 qt total

1.33 qt/lb 24 qts in the mash (do you add for grain absorption?)
161.8* strike water temp

My calculation came up with 12.5 qt of boiling water to add to bring the mash temp from 148 to 168.
(T2-T1)(.2G+Wm)/(Tw-T2)

leaves 11.5 qts to split between two sparges. Does this seem right?

If you can fit the 18# of grain + 24 qts. of strike water + 12 qts. of water to get to mashout temps, why do 2 sparges? Just do one and get it over.

Also, 18# of grain is going to absorb 2.5 gallons of water or more.

By my calculations using the tastybrew calculator, dough in with 24 qts of 161* water to get to 149*. Then add 12 qts. boiling water to get to 168*. That should yield about 6.5 gallons of wort. Then sparge with 5 gallons of water.

Thanks Erik.
Everything worked out all right.

I was going to do two sparges off of something I had read the other day.

Well I guess I'll find out if HSA is a myth. My system started sucking in air and was blowing bubbles into the sweet wort.

I've got to make some changes to my setup. Definately need to pick up a keg and add sight glasses for a hot liquer tank. And make a brew sculpture.
